A lovely, secluded and peaceful place to visit, extremely well maintained by a group of volunteers; this reserve is a little known treasure. I'm so glad I found it Sorry this is not the rspb reserve, it is Big Pool Wood nature reserve very close to Talacre. The rspb reserve has a good hide that looks out over the estuary, visited by shelduck, oyster catchers , little egrets and many other birds. It's also the nesting site of ringed plovers.

An RSPB site, but free access and no visitor centre. On the grounds of a demolished colliery with a hide looking out on the Dee estuary and a trail/cycleway with easy access. Forms part of the coastal path so also access to the beach. Surrounded by a gas pipeline shore station and lots of static holiday caravans. Nice and quiet and wild in the winter, but I'm sure it's packed in the summer.
