Recently bought a ton of Homeflame Plus smokeless briquettes. This is described as 'low ash' on their website. It clearly is not low ash. Burning it generated twice as much ash by weight and volume compared with my previous supplier. I feel that the description of their product is very misleading and inaccurate. Feefo reviews appear over generous and Maxibrite are not listed on Trustpilot..... makes you wonder! I would advise anyone considering buying Homeflame Plus to buy a 10kg bag from Asda or other local supplier first. Asda reviews are limited but currently only rate the product as 3 star.

After a bit of research online Maxibrite looked ok for prices. I called and asked for advice and ended up buying 4 ton of Homeflame. It does burn but not the best or anywhere near it. But - The reason for 1 star is not just the poor (ish) performance but the unbelievable amount of waste ash. In 1 week using 1 fireplace (evenings) and 1 multi fuel burner (most of the time) I get 3 full buckets of ash and we are not into the really cold weather yet. I am late 60's Mrs is late 70's and raking through piles of ash is not easy on the knees. I have been using multi fuel burners for over 40 years so not a beginner by any means. Also sweep my chimneys and keep everything in order. I have used other fuels and they burn well, next day put the Homefire in and poor burn and LOADS of ash. Poor show! Interestingly Maxibrite mainly show up 5 stars on the Feefo review site so looked into Feefo. They do not appear to be a fair and balanced review site (google Feefo and see what I mean). Having said all that I must say the chap I spoke to who advised me at Maxibrite was pleasant and plausible :( Smokeless fuel is made by grinding down anthracite into a powder then re-forming it into briquettes using a binding agent. The binding agent used will be starch or molasses so not much is left behind once it has burned. However, in Homefire from Maxibrite there is so much ash left over I can only think the binding agent must be a different material or the original anthracite is of a poor quality. My lessons learned are 1 I will not buy from Maxibrite again. 2 I will never trust Feefo review site again. 3 In future only buy 1 ton then try it and if OK then buy more.
