T Mawr Standing Stone is worth a stop, especially if you know about the other ancient monuments in the area. T Mawr means Big House in Cymru Welsh. The solitary standing stone is in the middle of the field and is accessible through a gate and then another gate into the field. It is a rather tall stone for the area. But, unless you know much about neolithic monuments and such, some might think, oh, a big rock in a farmers field. keep that in mind when others are travelling with you. Always be respectful of the monuments and best not to touch the stones as the oils in your hands can speed up erosion. Remember that these stones are thousands of years old and are irreplaceable parts of our history.

This strong standing stone with ancient burial and ritual significance probably dates back to The Bronze Age (up to 4000 years ago) and stands approximately 9 feet tall. It is possibly linked to the very visually impressive Trefignath Burial Chambers which are only a short walk away. The stone does have a distinctive twisted structure when viewed from certain angles and it is often described as solitary but this is not the case as I counted five smaller stones and one group of small stones some 15 to 60 metres away from the main stone running in a straight line parallel to the field fencing in front of the main road here. These are pointing towards the Trefignath Burial Chambers yet are seldom mentioned?. I assume these are not faux items added at a later date?. They seem genuine to me. Ty Mawr is sometimes referred to as the Trefignath standing stone taking in the probable link here. I parked in an unfinished road link point layby of sorts in front of a gate some 40 metres from the stone itself. The stone can be seen from the road passing the truck stop. Admission is free but please ensure the wooden gate leading to the field containing the stone is closed after you as livestock use it. Normally sheep, which quickly disperse when approached. Their droppings don't disperse so quickly though so tread carefully!.
