Im new to fishkeeping but Ive been to 6 local fish stockists around Caerphilly and Cardiff since the beginning of January when I first started researching and Big blue is by far the most consistent in tank cleanliness and has the widest freshwater fish selection relative to size. Please note that there are no saltwater fish or corals from what Ive seen at present so if youre looking to expand your reef set up go elsewhere.
Ive ended up buying every single one of my fish from here because they just look so much healthier, lively and vibrant compared to every other shop Ive been in and I was able to get them all in the same place. Yes there are more fish in one tank than in an ideal world but please show me a pet shop that isnt exactly the same. Unfortunately the nature of the beast, but the least that can be done is ensuring the tanks are clean and properly treated to compensate which Big Blue excels in at first (and twelfth) glance.
Think Ive bought over 40 fish from here so far and so far only a couple of losses due to what I think was relocation stress which was rectified by the shop as my tank levels were all within parameters when they tested.
Ive spent a small fortune here at this point, but I havent noticed a huge difference in the prices between here and the Maidenhead in Pughs, I guess there are slight differences depending on supplier, time of year, availability etc as with everything but not enough of a difference to make me travel the extra distance for the cheaper price.
Nice selection of decorations and plants available here, there is obviously more extensive choice at Pughs due to the massive size of the shop down there but there is ample to choose from here. Even pestered them into giving me the blue rock out of one of the tanks to fit my tanks rainbow theme which they happily obliged . Would like to see some of the smaller/in vitro plants for sale here for nano aquascaping in future (Alternanthera mini, Anubia petite, Java moss, red root floaters etc), but only for selfish reasons so I dont have to make the slightly longer trip to Pughs .
Thank you Alicia, Matt and Alan for rescuing my brain the last couple months and for being a place to relax when I need to chill out
