St. John's House is a lovely place, managed by a vibrant community of volunteers. The place and the history of its rescue deserve more recognition. It's a great experience for family: my son loved practising "Brass rubbing" to reproduce a Welsh dragon, that is now gleefully on display in his bedroom =). Nearby are also worth a visit the St Illtyd's Church and the ruin of Newcastle Castle (Y Castell Newydd), both at ~3 minutes walking distance from St. John's House.

Beautiful, fascinating, and much loved historical house, probably the oldest in Bridgend, with well presented interpretation and discussion pieces and a team of dedicated, friendly, and very knowledgeable volunteers. The house is a rare survivor of a medieval or early Tudor hearth passage house, and has some carved stone plaques, possibly medieval, which may relate to the medieval order of St John (Knights Hospitallers). One of the best things is that much is unknown, with more mystery than history, so visitors can bring along their ideas and share them, and such debate is highly valued by the St John's team.

Fantastic historical heritage right in the heart of ancient Bridgend that you probably didn't know about. Make a point of visiting on one of the open days. Check the Facebook group for details
