I had recently been told there was a fantastic sweet shop in Somerset Street, Abertillery but, despite frequent shopping visits to this delightful little town from my home in nearby Blaenavon, I had not come across The Olde Sweet Shoppe until last week when I deliberately set out to find it - and, what a find!
Being located in Somerset Street, this glorious little gem is situated away from the actual town centre - but, if you know it's there (and I do now)it is well worth the extra few minutes' walk, as I am sure you will agree when you follow my footsteps and visit Clare's Olde Sweet Shoppe.
Clare opened her sweet shop in Abertillery about 6 years ago and has recently registered her business with Google Local Guides. As you will note from my photographs, the shop is set out with an 'olde worlde' touch which really does enhance the experience. I opened the shop door not knowing what to expect; there was so much going on that I didn't know where to focus my attention first.
What did catch my eye especially (apart from the jars of sweets in gloriously regimented rows on shelves behind the counter), was:
1. The Sweet Trolley which is available for hire (I believe Clare said 45 plus sweeties - but don't quote me on that, check with Clare).
2. The exquisite array of hand-crafted chocolate 'bouquets' i.e. a clever innovation of various chocolates, arranged to show these delectable delights to their best advantage. Each arrangement is set into individual containers, along the lines of floral bouquets, substituting flowers for chocolates. I thought this was a hugely unique and clever idea for maximising those very welcome gifts of chocolate.
Honestly, there really was so much to see - from strawberry sherbets to aniseed twists, Clarnico mint creams to Tom Thumb Drops and sherbet pips (who remembers sherbet pips?)plus so much more.
It has been said a picture is worth a thousand words - so, please enjoy the photos Clare allowed me to take.
Oh yes....before I go - Clare of the Old Sweet Shoppe in Somerset Street, Abertillery has a Facebook profile - with her phone number advertised.
Furthermore, Clare is more than happy to offer a delivery service to customers so you wouldn't have to trundle a wooden sweetie cart through the streets if you were to hire it...and, if you were to order one of Claire's chocolate bouquet extravaganzas as a gift, she will deliver to the lucky recipient.
Needless to say, there was so much more to catch the eye in the shop and so much more I could enthuse about - best way to experience the joys of Clare's sweet shop is to visit yourself. Enjoy my photos......
