Trwyn Du is a Bronze Age kerbed cairn on the South-West coast of Anglesey near Aberffraw, at risk of both coastal erosion and disappearing under shifting sand dunes. The Bronze Age cairn, a central stone burial cist surrounded by stones all encircled by large upright kerb stones, was discovered to be built on top of a far older site. Radio carbon dating of burnt hazelnut fragments discovered beneath the cairn place the site in the Mesolithic period, 7th millennium BCE. Over 5000 flint microliths were discovered during excavations in 1956 and 1974. The microliths range in size and suggested uses, from blades and points to axes and scrapers. Two flint filled post holes may have supported a windbreak to protect the knappers at work. The quantity of flint at the site suggests long term use and perhaps seasonal occupation. Little is visible of the cairn now, and nothing of the Mesolithic site. The site is now covered in grass with small sections of stone protruding through the turf. It is thought the site was overcome by wind-blown sand in the late Medieval period. Thousands of years ago, the site would have been some 5 to 7km from the sea on a small hill above a river valley.
