The corridors are wide, the bedrooms cosy and the kitchen/diner/lounge (with small conservatory) have open aspect views across fields to the beach at Skara Brae and the cliffs beyond.
There is a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings in, but there is also underfloor heating, throughout the building, which can be temperature-controlled from each room.
Only about five miles from the centre of Neolithic Orkney, Instabillie provides an excellent base for exploring the islands.
Karen had left us a welcome pack of Orkney produce, including cheese, biscuits and beer, as well as some eggs laid by her hens.
Everything was perfect!
