This is a real gem with fresh local food, warm and friendly staff and an open fire. There is a small bar and seating area, with a larger dining area equipped with a fire place and seats around it, should you choose to finish your meal with a dram. Despite turning up late without a booking for dinner we we were given a warm welcome. I would recommend the specials menu, I had local mushrooms for starters and a wild boar stew for my main course, both were good. Afterwards we retired to the fire with a Tomintoul dram. I would also highly recommend the hotels own honey which you can buy at reception or the bar. After a days walking in the hills if your looking for good, fresh traditional fare with a warm and welcoming atmosphere you cant do any better than eating at the Hotel Square.
