Betty Mouat's Bd

A fantastic place to stay, right next to Old Scatness iron age settlement and close to Jarlshof. As a bonus you can watch planes take off and land at Sumburgh airport. The Bd is comfortable and cosy with the peat fire, has everything needed for cooking basic meals in the kitchen/dining area and comfortable couches in the communal sitting room, which also has six bunk beds. There's a separate room with four bunks. The Bd has a toilet with a shower, and a separate WC which is used by visitors to Old Scatness when open. There's a washing line outside and a clothes airer to take care of drying laundry (hand wash only). Bds are between a bothy and a hostel in terms of facilities, some more basic than others, e.g. no electricity or shower, so don't expect luxury. Electricity when provided is by meters that take 1 coins, and heating by peat fires (fuel 8 per bag). The Sumburgh hotel offers good food, and there's a well-stocked shop nearby for supplies. You can walk from the Bd to Sumburgh Head, and Ness of Burgi which has the remains of an old fort. West Voe beach is also close by, an attractive stretch of sand.
