Carloway Mill is currently the smallest (but nevertheless hard-working) mill operating on the island. You can expect a friendly and knowledgeable visit with plenty of insights. I suggest calling in advance to make sure that they have availibilities left - the tours are free, but places are limited.

Could be a great experience but dont trust anything written on their website. It said it would be open and we drove there the last 2 days to find the door closed WITHOUT any indication. At least you could write down something on the door if you dont wanna take the time to update your website information. Disappointed.

(Translated by Google) I highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in Harris Tweed. It is the only one of 3 Harris/Lewis mills that offers a guided tour. Although we did not make an appointment for a tour, time was taken to tour the factory and the whole manufacturing process was explained to us in detail.

We arranged a tour by phoning a day in advance. We had a very friendly and welcoming reception and a most interesting tour! It was fascinating to find out about all the work and the (many!) different processes going into the final product. There is lots to see, like the mountains of fluffy wool after the colours are mixed. The big machines are very impressive and some of them are over 100 years old. More low key, but very labour instensive, is the stage where the whole length of woven fabric is checked on the light board, metre by metre, and any faults darned by hand. No wonder this tweed doesn't come cheap! The shop was much smaller than expected, just a little room off the hall. They didn't have anywhere near the range that they have available on their online shop. But what's there is very nice. Rolls of tweed by metre, of course, also some jackets, many shawls and some leather satchels with matchings tweed panels. I found a tweed which is exactly the kind of colour I was looking for, but which I hadn't seen in any of the other shops we had already been too. Lewis Blue, so beautiful! Do make sure you take cash though, as they don't accept cards!

The guys here are so friendly and knowledgeable. The free tour was brilliant and a must when visiting Harris & Lewis. We had our own Harris Tweed designed and woven for us. A must visit.
