(Translated by Google) Wandering the narrow streets of Scalloway stands a splendid sculpture in memory of 'The Shetland Bus 1940-1945'. On April 9, 1940, German forces invaded Norway. The country was unprepared and they soon fell into enemy hands. King Haakoon VII with his family and government exiled to London. Thousands of Norwegians fled on fishing boats to continue fighting to liberate Norway. Thus "The Shetland Bus" was born to help the resistance group left in Norway. The strategy of using trawlers ended at the end of 1943 when 44 of the crew lost their lives. The trawlers were replaced with destroyers which completed 166 clandestine missions without loss of life. "The Shetland Bus" finished at the end of 1945 with 210 missions, 400 tons of supplies. This memorial was built with stones taken from the site of the 44 deceased crew members and their names can be read. At the top of the monument is a splendid model of the fishing boat used in the operation.
