Darren, as friendly and chatty he is, was there to just look around. He said that a quote is free. He came and I explained the issue, he took the cover of of my intercom and moved about a few wires. Its fair to assume he was estimating at that point however when he finished, by luck the intercom began working again. Just like it did before I phoned them out. The problem was that it was working intermittently.
He said he cant touch the actual control panel at the entry of the close, a bit odd considering thats what they specialise in.
He then said the intercom works, quotes are normally free but since he took the cover off and moved a few wires (not fixing anything in the process, the issue reoccured shortly after he left) he charged me a call out fee of 50. Stated on the website he said, sure, but in our correspondence he clearly said quotations are free. Clearly the argument here is was the work done work chargeable in labour or exploratory work for a quote. If the former, why not charge me labour rather than callout charge. If the latter, why charge me a callout fee at all, its a quotation.
Shortly after leaving the issue returned, the solution was in the control panel at the close entry. A plastic joint box was exactly behind my button, putting pressure on the wires coming out of it resulting in intermittent contact. Once that was slightly shifted all issues were resolved.
Darren, a security specialist, said he refuses to work on the entry panel. Took two screws off, and moved some wires. As a matter of fact, after checking his reference guide he concluded the unit was wired correctly to begin with so theres an argument to be made that he did more or less nothing.
He maintained the friendly facade, 101 on how to make sure you guilt trip your client into thinking they should pay for something when we both know he really didnt do work worth 50.
I cant recommend this company for problems like this, really you should go to the manufacturer in this case Walker Security Systems as I found after the fact. They charge a callout fee too, but unlike Seguro they actually know how their products work, they know how to fix them and are not scared of poking at the rats nest since, again, they actually know to maintain their own security systems.
