I had been in touch with Ian from Colour Fence Glasgow for getting my back garden fence done (wooden vertical slatted). Total fence length was 9 meters and I got quoted 850 "in cash" for it. I had accepted it as I thought these might be the going rates and I wanted to get the fence done quickly. Come one day before the installation Ian texted me to put the 850 in a sealed envelope and hand it over to the guys who come to do my fence. I simply told him that it will be better if I make the transfer into a bank account, but he simply refused. I could not believe that he simply meant "payment in cash only, without any invoice/proof of payment"! Then he went on that he gave me a cheap quote based on him receiving cash only. As a customer I wasnt going to trust a complete stranger and my obvious decision was to cancel the deal then and there itself. So I simply got quotes from a couple of other well known Glaswegian fence builders (both having more reviews than what Colour Fence Glasgow has) and to my surprise I discovered that the fencing rates are significantly better than colour fence. As a matter of fact the ongoing rate for a vertical slatted wooden fence in Glasgow is 60 per sq m including VAT. And I was given proper invoices for the quotes along with a normal channel of making payment into the company business bank account. Exactly how you expect genuine tradesmen to be. One month after the quote from my selected tradesman I now have my new fence professionally up at an overall cost of 500 and extremely good workmanship (it had to be as they are a reputed fence builder). Maybe colour fence "might" have done a good job, but as a customer I needed to have myself protected with all proofs. Unfortunately I could not trust a total stranger with my money and a contract that I have now come to realize was at an extortionate rate with no proof of payment made should things have gone wrong. I will steer well clear of this tradesman!
