I've visited Iona Abbey Museum many times and it is my favourite (manmade) place in all Scotland. The collection of stone crosses and grave slabs connects the visitor both to the ancient Celtic church and the Lords of the Isles, and is all the better for being modest in size, housed alongside the abbey church and cemetery from which most of the exhibits came, and within sight and sound of the sea--as opposed to in a huge urban museum or exhibition. I have not been since the revamp and hope that the exhibits have not been swamped with arty lighting--because the natural stone colour has its own aesthetic. I also think it would be ideal to place replicas of the main items in their original positions in the open air. On one visit years ago there was some washing on a line (and unless I'm mis-remembering) even some chickens nearby. Far from detracting from the place's appeal, their quirkiness added to its charm!
