Tiree Campsite

Really mixed feelings about this site. Currently the only official campsite on the island, the hot showers were very welcome but it definitely has the monopoly and in my opinion is far too expensive for what it is. The pros- there are free hot showers and cooking facilities. The staff are friendly and I saw all communal areas being well cleaned regularly. The site itself is nice enough and sits within an expanse of fields with nice views across the island. The cons- there's a real feel that the site is being kept running in the cheapest possible way. The communal areas desperately need upgrading, there is a lot of wear and tear, damp, and mould in both the kitchen/eating area, and the inside shower. All toilets and the additional two showers are outdoors and portaloo style. Although clean they are very draughty and there is no lighting at all. The 'hand sanitiser' has been watered down to within an inch of its life and there are no hand drying facilities. Lastly, it's just not very comfortable, even in the basic sense. Tiree is a windy island but there's no attempt to shelter the site from the elements, even a little. The site itself is on an elevated pitch and is very exposed. We had a terrible sleep each night because even minor winds rip through the site. Apparently another camp site is in the works on a different part of the island so hopefully the competition will force tiree campsite to up its game.

We stayed 2 nights in 1 of the pods. They are described as basic, and they are, but obviously you can take your own tent, campervan etc instead. The campsite really stars due to its communal facilities: an area with 2 rooms you can eat in, cooker, fridges, freezer, washing machine, kettle etc. We met some lovely people this way The guy who runs the site is very helpful and friendly and it even has it's own standing stone just a short walk away too
