It was built by the architect John Henderson in 1861 in the Norman style and consecrated by Samuel Wilberforce in 1862. From 1884 to 1931 it underwent numerous additions and renovations until it was as beautiful as it is now.
As a curiosity I must say that it consists of two apses, corresponding to the two interior chapels, one of them the main one and another in the adjoining nave.
It is worth pausing to observe the existing carvings made by Meredith-Williams around 1926, on the oak doors leading to the interior.
