My mother was transferred here as a delayed discharge in February 2014. The site was dreadful. Although the single-ward unit was modern, the rest of the site was old and partly derelict. The hospital is on a hill. Arriving by foot I had to tread through water from a leaking sewer. Staff left patients in bed and gave them meals in bed. They seemed unable to empathise with patients and often left the radio or tv blaring noisily and the bay lights on when patients wanted to sleep. They were antagonistic towards me and called the police when I tried to wait in the secluded conservatory between visiting sessions because the site is isolated and there is no other waiting room. Little use was made of a Day Centre on the site - I was told I had to have permission just to go in to make enquiries! Although the unit was probably intended as temporary accommodation for delayed discharges like my mother, the impression I got was that most were expected to die there. The consultant decided that my mother (who had not been mobilised 4 months after a hip operation) should not be allowed to walk ever again for her own good! In disgust I removed her in April 2014 against medical advice and got her walking and climbing stairs the next day. Her 'high care needs' (immobility, double incontinence) evaporated when she got home. Staff have little respect for carers or relatives. Avoid!
