Islay Woollen Mill Co Ltd

In the land of craft whiskey, this is a gem of a place that produces another type of craft: woven goods. Tucked away in a building from the mid 1500s, Islay Woolen Mill is known world round for their goods. Youve seen them in movies like Braveheart, Rob Roy, and many others. They produce patterns for distilleries on the island (like Laphroaig). Visit the shop and you may even get a tour of their looms, some of which are nearly 100 years old. Scarves, shawls, throws, and so much more is available at great prices. The owners are a treat to talk to. There is also a bonus. Walk behind the building and you will find a lovely creek, with an accessible path to follow for a short walk. All in all this is a must for any trip to Islay.

First visited the Islay Woollen Mill about 60 yrs ago when it was run by my late mum's cousin Willie then again 11 yrs ago it was lonely meeting Gordon and his wife Sheila also knowing my Grt grandfather started weaving in the late 1800's its a very special place for me

This was the highlight of my trip to Islay. Loved seeing their woven fabric and finding some for future projects. Loved hearing their stories too. Dont miss this gem.
