Squirrel Cottage

My wife and I (from Australia) love exploring and walking in Scotland and have stayed on three occasions for a week at Squirrel cottage - mostly in autumn, and have found that time perfect weather for walking and enjoying he wildlife around the cottage - the red squirrel colony with feeder boxes at the front door of the cottage, lots of native birdlife and charts to help you identify the species and the occasional deer. The cottage is cosy and comfortable with an amazingly stocked pantry for your arrival and a library of books and pamphlets on walks and sights in the vicinity including the Pass of Killiekrankie, the town of Pitlochry (with a wonderful live theatre) and it is possible to walk to Blair Castle. The hosts, Kathleen and James, have extensive knowledge of the area, and are gracious and friendly in sharing it. There is also an excellent hotel a few minutes walk away where we have enjoyed several evening meals. We are planning another week at the cottage in year or so - provided our knees hold out! We can highly recommend Squirrel Cottage.

My husband & I spent two fantastic weeks at Squirrel Cottage in the autumn of 2019. James and Kathleen are warm, wonderful hosts. Kathleen takes great care to make the cottage charming and cozy. Her thoughtful touches are everywhere, from the pretty decor to all the supplies you could possibly need, to an absolute wealth of information about the area, especially its natural environment. James took us on a fascinating tour of the adjacent Killiecrankie battlefield (one of his ancestors fought in the battle!) and more than once shared fresh trout hed caught. One evening, they welcomed us into their home to dress up as Highlanders. Since they live next door, they are always available for questions or assistance but are very sensitive to guests privacy. For us, the highlight of Squirrel Cottage was its amazing natural setting. The sunroom provides a beautiful view of the lovely garden backed by trees that border the ravine through which a stream roars down to join the River Garry. Birds were constantly visiting the feeders visible from the sunroom & bedroom windows and colorful pheasants frequently strutted across the lawn. A short walk down the road is the village of Killiecrankie and access to several terrific nature walks. We very highly recommend Squirrel Cottage.
