THE place to eat & stay on Skye. Portnalong is a beautiful, quiet picturesque village on Skye just along from Carbost. The scenery is stunning and has the best view of the Cuillins in my opinion. The food in Taigh Ailean is excellent (I had Cullen skink & venison casserole on the first day and white bait & roast beef on the second day). The portions are massive too. They have a great selection of drinks especially Skye Ales, whisky & gin and all the staff are friendly and welcoming. We stayed over New Year so were lucky enough to enjoy a Taigh Ailean Hogmanay complete with traditional music. I understand the hotel is up for sale, I just hope whoever buys it can keep up the same high standards set by Katie & Johnny.

We did a tour around Scotland in september, doing several overnights stays in seven different hotels, from 2 to 4-stars. Our first impression was that the hotel looked a bit strange, there was no lobby and we were directed to a room outside of the hotel, passing the back of the kitchen. But how quickly turned that impression to sheer delight. It's all in the little details with this hotel: the way the towels are folded in our very lovely decorated room with kingsize bed; the positive quotes and pictures, scattered around the bathroom and restrooms, the personal little notes on the menu; the way Katy always finds the time to give a nice comment or have a little chat in the restaurant, even though it was full house (which gives you an indication about how well the food is prepared as well; the locals line up to eat here and everyone who as eaten here understands why!). In conclusion: we felt so welcome, so at home here; we loved the dinners and breakfast and the fact that we could also choose a fresh and non-fried plate for our daughter, the friendlyness and the location. Truely a little hidden gem and we will surely visit again when we come to Scotland again! Thank yo for everything Katie (Katy?) and staff!
