I attended a hypnobirthing course in 2022 and while there were some useful elements such as (all too brief) coverage of birthing positions and acupressure points, generally I was deeply concerned by my experience.
The sessions reeked of, and I feel encouraged, toxic positivity. Informed consent was not practiced when doing a particular exercise that relied on accessing anxiety over parenthood. The exercise unlocked some personal trauma. I did not know what the exercise involved when we started, and had I known I would have chosen not to participate for the sake of my mental health. I also felt I could not raise this as an issue in the space.
The sessions centred around visualisation and yogic breathing, with the assumption that participants are proficient in both. Little support or advice is offered of you are not.
To be honest, the entire course felt less like preparation for childbirth and more like anti hospital/assisted birth propaganda.
