Perhaps the most impressive aid agency in the UK. I am a biased reviewer as I set up the NGO that got absorbed by Mercy Corps in the mid 1990s, but I am very proud that it has grown from strength to strength and it has flourished in a very competitive fundraising market in the UK. It feels wrong to use these business terms when describing this type of work but it is a sign of the times that the NGO sector in general, and fundraising in particular, has in fact become competitive. The good thing is that Mercy Corps have maintained a really high quality of work all over the world. Sustaining that over the decades is an incredible achievement. I lost contact with them for many years, not wanting to interfere with the new management, but made contact in 2016. This year (2017) I visited their office in Kathmandu and was really impressed with their approach, which is to offer a complex range of services to remote communities in difficulty. If you're thinking about donating to them or volunteering for them, don't hesitate. You would struggle to find a better organisation.
