OK, but not impressed. We stayed in one of the cozy cabins and while the surroudings and the whole resort exterior were beautiful, the same cannot be said about the amenities. Great walking potential, excellent trails, fantastic activities in the Action Glen. Cozy cabin. Tired. We could not find it, the signage was missing/incorrect. The cabin itself is in dire need of some urgent repairs. The main door had gaps you can fit a stick through. So did the main bedroom door. Looks like that corner of the cabin sunk. The lock and the key cards rather dated and we needed a number of visits to the reception to get our cards changed only to be told it was due to our phones and cards. We stayed in a number of hotels and never needed to worry about this. The receptionists need to speak to the hotel management. And be more courteous and polite. Once we had a receptionist greet us. The rest of the dozens of times we were met with reception staff pretending to be busy to avoid contact. Once inside, the cabin offers everything you need, but does not deliver to the description on the website. The equipment and furnishings are rather dated and need an update and some repairs done. The log burner not working/blocked. Spent one whole evening blowing into it. I know it wasn't my fire making skills, as there was a bucket full of half burnt logs outside the cabin that showed that the previous guests had the same struggle. Main hotel. Dated. For a 4* hotel and how amazing it looks on the website, the actual interior was shockingly dated. From the carpets, stairs, furniture, both indoor and outdoor, to the facilities. Most of it were simple quick fixes. It has seen its better days. Looks like they either fired their maintennance team, or the management do not feel they need to invest. Food/Restaurants. Too expensive for not so special pub grub. 15 for a burger that was overcooked, dry, tasteless, fries clearly from a frozen bag. I had 5 burgers from a chippie that were far superior to this one. The kids menu lacked healthy options. The fish we ordered for our wee one came with a piece of plastic wrap on it! All bread was white, no brown/wholemeal/sourdough... Breakfast buffet was pretty good, a combination of scottish and continental, one thing and only had low fat yogurt. For 13 per person I was expecting more. Coffee in any of their restaurants and bars rather disappointing, tasted of cleaning products. Did not have full fat milk in any of the facilities. The staff in the restaurants and bars were very good! Staff. Very friendly, most of them. Receptionists. Ignored us. The receptionist at the spa had no clue about their procedures. Could not explain what certain massages were about, eneded up leaving without booking anything. The rest of the team were very helpful and friendly. The staff at the Big Country team were amazing. Our boy always loved going there and everyone we spoke to in the kids club were an absolute delight, they love the kids and the kids love them. The recap we got from our little chap was so tempting we were sad to be grown ups. Pool. Rather dirty. Steam room smelled of not sure what, but we were not finding out. The kids pool was very good, great move with the bucket full of toys. No water fountain in the pool area. Gym. Ok. Not much to add, a standard hotel gym. Lacked extended opening hours. Recap from the perspective of our child, 2 1/2 yo, he thoroughly enjoyed it from the pool to the beatiful walks, big outdoor playground, the Big Country kids club, squirrels and rabbits everywhere, horses, ponies, stairs, lifts, anything and everything. Recap from the perspective of the paying parent. Rather disappointed. Well overpriced for the experience we had. The little one had an absolute blast, but I am not sure that we will be coming back. We even left a day early.
