The Kitchens of the castle here were infilled to make a gun platform on the orders of Colonel Lauder in 1689 to give better defence against the Jacobite threat. The line of guns here protected the weaker East side of the castle, a master gunner's house was also built at the far end. This battery of guns was used in anger on 6th January 1746 to repel Jacobite artillery on Gowan Hill. Bonnie Prince Charlie gave up his siege of the castle and retreated to the North. The castle staff clean the guns regularly, they shine in the sunlight.
