When I compare our experience in North Yorkshire to this one it has been two ends of the scale with the first being a lovely experience and the latter being a complete nightmare that I would not wish on anyone.
Had my deposit been returned without quibble or even if a charge was made and the remainder returned with a bill I would have probably scored 3 stars. The initial comms was a bit slow but no big deal. The initial walk-through of the van was not ideal - I was told to read the manual and ask any questions if I was unclear. Having driven 6 hours I was just not that with it and really not in a position to know what I did not know. Again not ideal but not a huge deal. But on returning the Van I was then accused of having had dogs in the van. To be accused of lying I was incredulous - looking at the van and seeing some dog hairs which was from my son and I's clothing and bedding but was in no way more than ten minutes to vacuum I could not comprehend what the issue was. But more than this it was the aggressive and confrontational manner that was really upsetting. This was the end of my trip with my fifteen year old son and he was really upset and was really uncomfortable.
Having made it clear that I would be taking the matter further we left. Since that time things have got even worse as there has been no money returned at all from a 500 deposit. And the only correspondence has been after several emails and the response has been that there will now be 150 charge but no details have been given and my only option is to instigate legal proceedings.
The van itself was new and as advertised except that the Bluetooth was not working so we were unable to make use of Satnav or any music which represented a significant reduction in the value of the new van especially to my son - no offer of recompense - just told its not working.
Overall it is the worst rental experience I have had in forty years of arranging my own holidays and the only positive I can take from the experience is that it has strengthened my resolve to buy our own camper to avoid situations where 500 can simply be retained with no bill or evidence of an issue. Thank goodness I have some photographs and my son was present to witness the behavior. The picture is of the seat (notice lack of dog hair!!!!) And to be clear I would have posted 0 stars but could not Post without 1 star
