Beautiful wool products and great to see the process. Beyond our budget, sadly, but worth popping in

Delighted to be able to visit today. Very helpful and friendly staff and a wonderful selection of goods made with their beautiful wool/yarn: from pencil cases, scarfs, throws to woven material and garments. But the star of the show is their wool and yards, beautiful displayed with examples of what they look like when knitted or woven. Ive come away with a bag full of yarns for my own weaving projects. If you are thinking of purchasing any of their woven goods you will not be disappointed - they are stunning!

You might think that spending a week on the small Isle of Uist would leave you bored after a few days. You would be wrong. On day 5, driving through the landscape of fresh and salt water lochs, dotted by sheep nibbling on golden grasses, I spotted a small sign that said "The Mill and Wool Centre". I dared not dream that it would be open, on this first week of October morning. The door pushed forward as I turned the knob and opened in to an amazing experience that become one of the highlights of our visit to the Outer Hebrides. We were greeted warmly by a lovely young lady who eagerly answered our enthusiastic questions. I have never seen such quality woolens as are offered at the mill. The yarns are natural in colors and a delight to the eye. As I gazed through a glass window down in to the work shop of the mill, I found myself asking if we could go down there. I wanted a first hand view. The young lady smiled and said she would ask. We made our way down the stairs to where wool meets century old machinery. I was shown and allowed to help sort the wool and then gently spread it out to be slowly drawn in to the carder. The love that the staff put in to this endeavor, touched my heart. We watched the process from start to finish and were amazed that the machinery still works perfectly. A Calanas Check blanket is a must. Not a souvenir, oh no, but to be used as a part of your daily life. A working part of your home. I also purchased 2 rustic stunning sheep skin rugs. I was delighted to learn the wool of the long haired native sheep is so thick and matted, it can be sheered off into a rug with out the animal having to be killed. No sheep died just so I could have a soft fuzzy spot to rest my feet. I have even washed them and they are gorgeous. If you are fortunate enough to be driving along the Island of Grimsay in North Uist, and see a sign that says, "The Mill and Wool Centre", please stop and get a glimpse into a long gone era of fine craftsmanship and pride in ones work! If this ban is ever lifted, we will be back!! Thanks, Linda Brinegar

A great selection of wools, much merchandise and a nice view from the shop. It's a useful place for supplies but very 'in the middle of no where's I'd say. I like how they give the view of the machinery and have their own books; very interesting histories.
