I hired an alloy tourer from Rothan Cycles for a week's cycling through the islands (the best way to see the islands). Tommy left it outside the airport building as arranged. The bike was a light, sturdy hybrid with a comfortable saddle and a good set of gears/brakes, essential for the ascents and descents of the hills of Harris - well used, I would describe it as the black-faced sheep of bicycles. He certainly seems to know his stuff. I was happy to support a local business run by a true islander and gaelic speaker. As elsewhere on the islands, where honesty boxes abound, he seems to work on trust. It was refreshing not be asked for upfront payments, form completion, address details etc. The culture is pretty laid back. The best way of getting in touch with Tommy seems to be to call him on his home landline around meal times. Mobile coverage is patchy at best and I didn't get any response to emails as his computer was down at the time. Also, worth a gentle reminder a few days before you intend to hire.
