This restored, working mill in the beautiful village of New Abbey was at the centre of rural life there and provided work in one way or another for many local people. The tour was brilliant! I wish I had the tour guide's name to say thank you again. I was the only visitor that morning and he took his time chatting about every detail of the mill and also all the tools and implements which are still there. The history of the mill ties in so closely with the abbey and the surrounding area. You will learn a lot about life in New Abbey over the years as well as having a great opportunity to enjoy a very informative tour of the mill.

It's not a huge place, but it's interesting to visit, helped by good information displays and guides. The staff are friendly and well informed and are happy to take you round and answer questions. It's quite educational too, I learned more about how an old mill works in an hour than I ever knew before. Make sure to visit the mill race and the millpond above the actual mill too. Some of the stairs may be a bit steep for the less fit and young children would maybe need help with them. Although apparently it all works, it's not actually used to grind grain any more - I think they are missing an opportunity there, I'd have though they could sell the flour for a good price!
