My partner and I arrived home yesterday from a surprise 2 night stay at Grovewood House for my birthday. What an incredible place with even more incredible hosts! Our room (the Criffel View Room), was stunning and boasted an extra large double bed and a single bed, plenty of draws and a wardrobe for storage plus a beautiful en suite bathroom complete with an elegant slipper bath. The bed was one of the comfiest I've ever slept in when away from home and we both enjoyed a solid night's sleep both nights we were there. Due to work commitments and unexpected delays, we arrived at Grovewood House far later than originally intended on our first night. Our hosts Ian and Dawn, could not have been more accommodating and gracious when we contacted them to explain and they kindly waited up for us to arrive into the night (for which we were very grateful), Ian even offered to cook us something upon discovering we hadn't had a chance to eat yet! The following day a friend of mine contacted our hosts to request they pass on a happy birthday message to me complete with a bottle of fizz. When we returned to the room to find a gorgeous wicker basket complete with champagne glasses, a bottle of moet and chandon, flowers, shortbread and a bottle of blueberry white tea courtesy of both our aforementioned friend and our lovely hosts we were thrilled. It was a touching gesture and was very much appreciated. To say Dawn and Ian go above and beyond for their guests is putting it mildly! Breakfast was a perfect feast of fried eggs, grilled tomato, potato cake, haggis, square sausage (also known as Lorne sausage), beans, bacon, traditional sausage and toast with real butter, all washed down with a choice of tea, coffee, orange or apple juice. Cereals and fruits with jams were also on offer. We ate like Kings (and enjoyed the company of Robbie the robot, see pictures) and were fully set up for a day of adventuring off the back of those breakfasts each day. The B&B is situated in a breathtakingly beautiful garden with a picturesque stream and a very well placed hot tub amongst the trees and foliage providing a good sense of privacy and an overall air of tranquillity. The area in general is a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Wifi and network signal were both exceptional. The beach and local pub are only a short 20 minute walk away and Dumfries is just over a 20 minute drive away so there are plenty of things to see and do. Putting it simply Grovewood House is the best B&B we've ever stayed at and we had an amazing time. We hope to be back there again sooner rather than later. I really cannot recommend this absolute gem of a place enough. Thank you so much for having us Dawn and Ian!
