At this place on the 5th January,1976, cowardly members of the IRA stopped a minibus containing workmen returning home from a days work. The occupants of the vehicle consisted 11 protestants and one Roman Catholic. The Catholic man was singled out and told to run away down the road, the 11 Protestants were lined up against the minibus and were mowed down in a hail of bullets. Miraculously one man survived even though he was hit by 18 rounds. All of these men were totally innocent, hard working individuals. No one has ever faced justice for these callous murders, even though it is believed local people know exactly who pulled the triggers, indeed the gunmen probably lived within walking distance from the scene. At the time it was claimed these murders were carried out as an act of reprisal for the murder of a number of Catholics by Loyalist terror gangs. The sad reality is that none of these people should have died, Protestant or Catholics. This memorial wall is just another stark reminder of how evil man can be when they allow hatred for their neighbour to outweigh respect and neighbourliness.
