This stone Font was carved to hold water for Christian baptism. It comes from the former Reformed Episcopalian Christ Church, which was built nearby in 1880 but demolished in 1905, due to falling congregation numbers. The materials from the Church were then used to build a terrace of houses named Christchurch Villas, which were eventually demolished to make way for the construction of the Queensway dual carriageway. Only the Font in Sidney Gardens now remains as a memorial to the Church.
