Booked a table at 9am for 12pm on the same day. Ended up having to cancel because my grandma wasnt well. Cancelled at 11am and got charged 40. Absolutely disgusting.

Paid for the deposit in the morning, cancelled and then charged us 40. There has to come a point when companies can't use covid any longer. We understood why initially but we're in 2023 now and we'd understand if it was a busy booking period which was in place for weeks or if it was a large booking but it was booked 2 hours before the actually meal for 4 people. There is protecting your business and then there is an abuse of a term with no reasonable judgment in place and using something that started 3 years ago and effectively ended over a year ago. It's such a shame as it seems like a nice pub, but a toxic, pedantic culture must exist for you to take deposits in that manner. I'm sure you would say, we have to protect our business, but covid is over now and cost of living crisis is here and everyone is suffering. I see you mention about it being unethical picking and choosing people to return their refunds. I think it's far more unethical taking money off people for no food in 2023.
