As far as rural churches go this one offered me so much that I felt sorry to leave. Such isolation, tranquility, charm and spirituality in a tiny little space. Spot the great bench ends, wood carvings and beautiful stonework. It seems hardly unchanged for centuries

This is a beautiful 11th-century church at the side of the B1106 and is well worth the time to stop and have a look . I met and spoke to a very nice 84 year old man here who has looked after and cared for this church for 20-plus years . What a hero he is and what a great job he does it is clearly lovingly kept . The parish was called Wridwella in the Domesday Book of 1086, meaning a twisted stream, and Wordwell is derived from this name . In the 1500s, there were two bells here, one having been removed and is now in Moyses Hall Museum . The interior boasts a twelfth century font carved from one piece of stone and stands on three legs . Each leg once had a carved head probably representing the Father , Son and Holy Spirit . There are some great carved benches sadly damaged by the Puritans in Cromwells time . I personally loved the Reredos proudly quoting Exodus XX the pulpit was great two . It is now under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and of course the previously mentioned Hero . Thank god for them our environment would be much poorer without them in my opinion .
