I contracted Scott Jukes via People per Hour at the end of October 2020 to redesign my website. The agreed terms of the contract included all steps from the redesign of my site up to and including testing and the site going live on the worldwide web.
I deposited the entire contract fee requested by Scott with People Per hour and Scott began the project.
Stage 1 of the redesign was delivered by Scott just before Christmas 2020. Unfortunately, at that time I was feeling unwell with what I now believe to be Covid, and I did not feel well enough to check the work and informed Scott of this. Despite this and not wishing Scott to be out of pocket for the works he had done, I agree to the release half of the contract fee to Scott. With hindsight I do not believe anyone knew how devastating Covid would be.
At that stage, the works that remained to be done, was to test the site and go live. I hoped to provide Scott with feedback to complete the project when I recovered from my illness.
Unfortunately, my health became significantly worse and on 15 March 2021 I had a heart attack. I was rushed into Intensive Care and a few days later I had heart surgery. I informed Scott about my emergency from hospital and told him that I could not deal with the project as I was in intensive Care and needed to focus on my health. He said he understood.
On 26 May 2021, Scott wrote to me asking whether the remaining contract fees could be released to him. As I was still recuperating after the heart attack, and during the midst of the Covid pandemic, I agreed to release the remaining monies to him as I did not want him to be out of pocket or waiting whilst I recovered for an indeterminate period of time. Scott knew that the project had not been completed and the reasons why.
Since May 2021 Scott has been fully paid for the contract project despite it not being completed or gone live. I did not have to release the monies to him, but I thought it was the right thing to do as my illness was not his fault.
My recovery has been slow. In March 2023 I contacted Scott to finish the works he had been paid in full for in May 2021. To my amazement Scott insisted on a further payment of more than 60% of what I had previously paid him to re-familiarise himself with the project. He wanted to double charge me. I found this to be very mercenary and I felt taken advantage of especially when he knew I had been through a serious illness.
I have asked Scott on several separate occasions since to complete the contract by finishing the project he has been paid for in full. He has not replied. I am now left with no alternative, but to sue him for breach of contract and leave this review.
I hope this review will help future clients not to suffer the same fate as me. I paid the monies to Scott in good faith. I now find myself in a situation that if I want to complete the project, I need to pay more monies when I have already paid Scott in full for the project and he has not completed the same. I know business is business, but I think his attitude is highly unprofessional and unreasonable.
