History of the Acre dates back to the Middle Ages and was the place where ordinary townsfolk would meet where markets and fairs were permitted in Windsor by its Charters. Until 1855 the Acre was the site for the famous Annual Revel that was held on the birthday of the Sovereign. Bachelors Acre includes part of the original Acre Grave Yard, which is located alongside Madeira Walk and where some of the memorial stones are still legible today. The area was refurbished in 1998 and a water feature which has jets of water rising at different times and heights was introduced. The far east entrance a statue was unveiled by the wife of King George III - Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz - the Queen consort to commemorate his husband 50 years on the throne 1810. To the right of the fontaine, there is free of charge public lavatory and seasonal ice-cream parlour. 'The Windsor Lady' statue A statue of Her Majesty The Late Queen Elizabeth II has been installed into Bachelors Acre as part of the Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations. The elegant statue entitled 'The Windsor Lady' - that is how us Windsorians used to refer to our beloved, the most noble habitant and neighbour - was sculpted by local artist Lydia Karpinska and shows the sovereign in an informal pose seated with six dogs - corgis and dorgis. The statue and installation were privately funded and are awaiting further sponsorship and donations.
