So, these things stood out vision-wise, things which should have had my chops slathering down my bib on contact: visually, the roast was anaemic-looking and colour-drained; the veg was good in principle, mashed root swede and turnip a little watery, shell-off peas a little hard, string beans which could have shined in their youth but boiling water had put paid to that. I ordered cauliflower cheese to get the full gamut but this was undercooked on the side of raw, watery and lacked visible cheese topping, the roasters were a little dry and the Yorkie had given up the ghost, looking quite like one.
On the plus side, this is the best meat I've come across in a roast jamboree, it was tender, lean, well-cooked and had flavour; if this is free range let's get free, it really was tasty pork without being fibrous or tasteless - a true eye-opener. The spuds, although dry, had their hearts in the right place, cooked I think without oil, needing a pick-up but really nice rosemary seasoning on them. The mash was chunky - I like to get my chops round a scoop of mash rather than drink it like a milkshake - but it needed a little butter or cream to raise it from just being crushed potatoes. The gravy was nice and authentic, maybe a little thicker to help the spuds out.
Healthy - or not, perhaps, in its excess water content and grey-green bean skins - but I need to bag my roast lunch from the bush and drag it home kicking and screaming before it gets the apple sauce and this, accompaniments-wise, had gone off the boil before the porker sensed danger.
What was lost in salt, which I missed in this roast, could have been made up for with strong unexpected veg flavours. I say cool it on the veg and be more tender, they won't just do it by meeting water, give the spuds their appearance justification - they looked good - address the lifeless Yorkie and keep the meat exactly where it is, at the top of the table. Good going, Hungrys, but with a little deliberation you could pull off a natural, healthy AND rumbunctiously tasty huntsman's Sunday platter.
NB The price and value was exceptional so step it up.
