What a find this place is! 'Under new management' is a clich, but The Hartley is clearly loved by the new team. While many pubs have become 'gastro' (shorthand for expensive fish and chips) with drinkers being second class customers, this canalside gem welcomes you, whether you order a beer or a burger. On that subject, we visited on a Saturday night for a meal, having watched a burger meal served to another customer on a previous visit. My partner chose the beef lasagne (veg option available) with chips, which was fantastic. However, 8 ounces of perfectly cooked succulent hand made burger later, I reckon I was winning at life. My side salad couldn't have been fresher; absolutely everything was bang on. A stacked plate of honest, great value grub like pubs used serve, with restaurant quality, served cheerfully and efficiently. Away from the food, The Hartley has a really happy vibe - canal boaters mixing with locals and visitors for the real British pub experience. A decent pint, lots of traditional tables and stools. Oh, and the friendliest staff who were genuinely touched to get our appreciation for their efforts. Great job The Hartley, and thanks! Did I mention the burger? (Just in case you're wondering, no this isn't any sort of paid review - I'm just delighted to finally find a real pub)
