We were looking for a game on the way down from a trip to Scotland. When we arrived we were warned there had been rain and greens would be slow. It was only after paying full price, we were told the 18th hole was closed and replaced by a temporary par 3. The 18th hole looked like the signature hole and would add to most golf courses, so a disappointment for it to be closed. We were not expecting a quick round as members had been out in a competition earlier but it was much slower than expected. We were very surprised when a foresome group asked if we would let them through as they were playing a match against two members from another club, and assured us they would be quick. They also said they would ask the two-ball in front of us to let them through and other groups ahead of them. This is a common courtesy at my golf club, so we let them through, much to the disgruntlement of my playing partner, who still had a five hour journey to complete after we finished the game. As it happened, the group playing the foursomes match lost several holes on the group in front and held us up more than we had been before we let them through. Any enjoyment from the game was taken away by the condition of the course and the pace of the group which were slower than that expected of a four-ball. This looks like it would be a great track in good weather but does not drain well. The fairways were longer than the first cut, no doubt to protect the course, but we should have been warned and offered a reduced green fee or partial refund. I suggested to the Pro after the round that we should have been advised against playing, as would have been the case at my club, and had been at another club we called to ask about playing. He just smiled and shrugged his shoulders, possibly receiving a percentage of green-fee income. I doubt I will return, even in better weather, due to the experience. Dont let this detract you if you are looking to play when the weather is good and the course relatively empty as it could be a great course.
