United synagogue is going the same way as federation. An institution that once thrived in the east end, now just irelevant. Children of the United synagogues that are still around have either married out, become more orthodox, or made aliyah. The frum kehila has largely built back up. I guess there is just no need for these types of institutions anymore. Growing up in a united synagogue shul honestly felt like a church service. (Not that I've been to one, but from videos I've seen online.) People were more English than they were Jewish. Anyway. United synagogue is like the jewish equivalent of the Church of England. There are probably 10 shuls that are stable, the other 50 will be gone within the next 20 - 30 years as they are in dying areas. United synagogue say they are orthodox, really they are just traditional. Traditional judaism just doesnt work anymore. United synagogue shuls serve largely the elderly, they cant really cater to the young as they move on to other countries such as Israel or America. I think its become irrelevant nowadays. United synagogues are full of people who are Karens.
