We didnt realise there are actually two YHAs within the Wye Valley, this one and St Briavels castle. We were initially a little annoyed that we hadnt realised St Briavels existed, but looking further on google we realised it was the most haunted castle in Britain. Thankfully this was a near miss for us wimpy folk !!! The bumpy track down to the hostel is a single track lane which would require a good level of driving experience (especially if driving at night or in the rain), so please take care and consider this and the size of your vehicle. As expected with YHAs, there was a friendly and familiar welcome. We were in a hungry state and considered the YHA for dinner, but there is a local pub nearby that does Indian food which is about 20 minutes walk away if you actually take the correct route. Please see our review there for The Forge Hammer and River Spice. Overall the washroom and shower facilities were below average for our typical YHA experiences but the cooking facilities were ample, including two ovens and four gas hobs with some amenities like tea and milk available. We stayed within one of the Landpods which had two spacious double beds and were situated fairly reasonably away from the bustle of the hostel. There was a large-ish window that you could peep out of and a bench in front. They were warm enough in April. As always with our reviews .. bring ear plugs otherwise youll be woken up by all sorts of fauna. We recommend having your breakfast on the balcony, looking over the river and some possible fast flowing canoers.

Incredible setting, riverside with large grounds and lovely large house. Very friendly staff, only issue is if on a top bunk the emergency fire light is a green LED so worth bringing an eye mask, but extremely friendly and welcoming staff make this a great stay. Excellent self catering kitchen and decent catered breakfast options available. If driving be prepared for an extremely narrow one width car final decent. Take caution as this only really has one passing space and consider parking at top or across the valley if reversing is not your strong suit.
