In Medieval Europe, which was entirely Catholic, the church collected its own tax (called a tithe). Tithes were stored in the tithe barn in times of plenty and rationed out in times of hardship, like for example Crop Failure. Payment was compulsory. Refusal meant you wouldn't go to heaven, your sins wouldn't be forgiven and you risked being SHUNNED and EXCOMMUNICATED. Tithes were paid by farmers. A tithe equals one tenth.
