    If only zero stars were an option. After a long day travelling on the hottest day of the year, we were disappointed to be welcomed by a persistently yapping and growling dog, a grimy, damp and dusty cottage with all the windows and doors locked up tight, a single bottle of cider for one of us, and a small jug of mystery milk (dairy? use by date?) in the fridge. We started trying to air the place and realised we couldn't open the living area patio window shown on the booking web site cottages.com as this opens into our hosts' garden, where the persistently unfriendly dog was still barking and growling at us through the window. This meant we had to keep the curtains closed for the duration of our stay. The curtains had yellow mould spots and were filthy. We had to admire the little dogs tenacity as he harassed us and our dog almost daily. The hosts made no attempt to say hello whilst we were there. However they made their presence felt as on the Wednesday evening the ride on mower was used directly outside the patio doors to our cottage. The longer we stayed the more little surprises we found. The temperamental shower, the rationed cleaning products and toilet roll, the dirty kitchen utensils (don't use the baking sheet in the oven), the cottage handbook that's online but there's close to zero internet connectivity via wifi, the mystery stains on blankets and curtains and general grime (don't look behind the wardrobe in the bedroom either). We've added a couple of pictures to this review. We feel duped. We paid a lot of money to stay somewhere grotty and that wasn't a 'luxury' or 'romantic' experience. The silver lining was that we were more inclined to explore this part of the world as we tried to find things to do that kept us out of the cottage. Avebury for the summer solstice was fun. Watchet is lovely. Cheddar Gorge is breath taking.
