I took my 90-year-old mother who has Dementia to Leith Opticians yesterday. Mid-way through the eye examination they administered eye drops and we had to wait 20 minutes for the drops to take effect. Mum sat in a chair in reception. I went outside the shop to get some air. After about 15 mins a woman from Leith Opticians opened the door and told me that my mother wanted to go to the toilet and that because they "did not have toilets" I needed to walk her to the church hall or the 'Hub' about 70 meters away. I was aghast. We had luckily got a parking place outside the Leith Opticians premises, there was a blustery wind and Mum struggled to walk. They knew she was in a care home as I had just changed the address from her former residence in Abbots Road where she resided for last year's eye examination. I struggled with Mum up the High Street. She was confused and upset. We reached the 'Hub' where a notice in the window told us: 'Closed All This Week.' This was distressing. I carried on struggling with Mum until we got to 'Perception Male Grooming'. I stuck my head inside and the barber boys there. They couldn't have been more helpful. Mum was given permission to use their loos and made welcome both when we entered and when we left. Kudos to PMG!
You can tell the type of service you are going to get from the values that the people who staff and run the business hold. I do not know whether Leith Opticians lied to us about there "being no toilets" in their shop. You have to ask though: Where do they go to the toilet if the 'Hub' is shut for a week? Leith Opticians insist we wear masks and are trussed up like COVID kippers but in terms of compassion for my Mum, they were sorely lacking.
Assuming my mother is still alive a year from now, we will certianly NOT be returning to Leith Opticians again. As a result of this experience, I would not advise others to do so unless they are equipped with a urinal bag.
