A lunch stop on a circular walk out of Wells. Interesting old pub with a good pint and superb food with probably the best steak pie I've ever had. BUT. We arrived tired and thirsty and headed straight to look at the options on the bar but were assertively intercepted by a waitress asking us whether we had a reservation. We were then escorted without further ado to a table where I had to remind her we'd probably quite like a drink before being forcibly fed. It was a quiet lunchtime but they had insisted on parking us in the restaurant right on top of the only other occupied table in the room. The morgue-like silence of the room meant the adjacent dining couple were whispering to each other in an effort to be polite or not be overheard. We tried normal level conversation and it felt excruciating. The pub wasn't busy but the staff managed to create a really uncomfortable dining atmosphere. Maybe try some appropriate music when this quiet, and why park tables next to each other when so quiet? Shame, as the food really was very good.
