Up until his retirement I can say this was a wonderful little practice, that had my full support and trust. Whilst I've had numerous problems with my teeth throughout my life, I always felt confident in Mr Wylie, and the staff seemed to have a genuine rapport with all the patients, whether they were new or established. Despite the fact it was between 30-45 minute drive away from where I lived, I would regularly recommended it to friends and family.
In the years following Mr Wylie's retirement the surgery underwent a massive overhaul, with a partial structural rebuild, all new staff brought in and a vast amount of seemingly technical and expensive equipment to support not only standard appointments, but cosmetic as well.
In the short few years that I remained with the practice post Paul's departure, I have been left with a bitter taste in the mouth (excuse the pun). Every visit would end with a new quote for some work that was "critical" and it was never cheap! I felt like nearly every interaction that I had with the staff was forced, as rather than finding myself comfortable, every conversation seemed to opened up an opportunity to steer me towards spending yet more money. I think I ended up spending more in 4 years than I had the entire 25 years previous, either with the practice or with recommended partner businesses.
After one appointment where I was quoted in excess of 1000 for some work, I decided to seek a second and third opinion from other Dentists. I told neither of these alternative practices of the work that had been quoted. They each conducted their own inspections, with neither highlighting any significant issues. Following my check up I showed them both the quotation that I'd received from Urchfont for the work they said I had to have done, and both alternative practices concluded that I didn't need to have the work done that they had stated. I left the Urchfont practice around 2 years ago and went back to the NHS and I'm so happy I did.
I know there's this posh stigma that going to an NHS Dentist is substandard as opposed to having private dental care, but it's one thing to have this sense of personal standing in the community, it's another to set fire to cash when you could be just spending money for something you don't actually need. So my advice would be to seek a second or third opinion and consult with an NHS practice before committing to get any work done, either with Urchfont or anyone else. I can't prove it, but I feel like I've played a big part in paying for the rebuild and new machines, handing over lord knows how much for work I quite possibly didn't need to, but I guess that'll teach me for being snobbish and thinking private was better than public.
