A third-rate operation. They were supposed to be testing my partner for an automatic wheelchair in the care home where she lives. We waited 3 months--then a letter came saying she now had to go to their premises at Hawkeys Lane at 10am. The time wasn't really suitable but the letter said appointment times can't be changed and had to be confirmed. I rang several times over 2 days before someone answered the phone. We eventually got there and were led to a ramshackle room with wheelchairs and also equipment on shelves--they was hardly any room to properly test out a wheelchair. My partner needs a standee for easy transfer to and from her wheelchair but they didn't have one! The 2 jokers who work there then decided she would have to use a hoist but they couldn't manage to get it under her body (not surprisingly since she was sitting down!)--She was transferred manually to the automatic wheelchair by myself and one of them. She was given approximately 3 minutes to check whether she could operate the chair--even though they could see she was anxious!. One of them kept saying she was too anxious to operate the chair so wasn't suitable. He also kept saying that because on one side she is paralysed and has no vision she wouldn't be able to see people coming in that direction--but one-eyed people drive cars! He seemed surprised my partner was even getting tested--even though I told him she was referred by the nurse in her care home and the manageress knew about it (and all the staff as well)--so presumably they thought she was suitable. Automatic wheelchairs can be hired from the wheelchair centre in Whitley Bay for a week to see if they are suitable but they gave my partner 3 minutes which is an absolute disgrace. It's the NHS--so prioritising is taking place.
