Test drove an MG4, really did feel that in lots of ways it was a pretty amazing car. It seems well built, quiet, refined, quite comfortable but also with pretty decent handling and even performance.
Unfortunately, during the test drive we noticed a fairly major software bug; driving mode would not stay put in eco/sport/etc. but instead repeatedly self-reverted to "Snow" mode. This happened half a dozen times.
We explained this to the salesman when we returned. Response was somewhere between utter lack of interest (didn't offer to go and look at the setting/didn't offer to accompany on a 2nd short test drive) or actually excusing the problem.
"It's a budget car, you get what you pay for" was said, as though this excuses an actual fault. Yes, I accept cheaper cars might have lower quality materials, fewer features, etc. But faults are not "just to be expected".
Now whilst I do like the car enough to have called a second dealership (Guildford; much better attitude) I couldn't in all good sense order a car which, on my only drive, had a problem. It might have been fixed by the time "my" car arrives, but it might not. And I know I'd kick myself if I went ahead and ordered a car, knowing it was faulty in that way, and then it turned up with exactly the same problem.
I also got the feeling that the dealer really didn't care if I bought the car or not because he mentioned that they'd sold about sixty of the same model in the last few weeks and that "the press have done a really good job on this one".
Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, sadly.
In due course I will test drive the car, again, at Guildford and may even order one. Reportedly (I've asked on forums) the snow mode bug is 'known' and may already have been fixed.. which begs the question why the dealer's demo car hadn't had the patch applied, and also why the dealer didn't know this himself.
Disappointing. Do not recommend. And if you do go for a test drive in their MG4 EV in white, try resetting the driving mode a few times whilst you're driving.
