This is a beautiful place to visit and explore. The Nature Reserve has a lot to offer and has plenty of history behind it with the earthworks of an old motte and bailey Norman castle on the west of the site, and then in the east the old stone pits which once had entrances that led underground and likely dated back to Roman times. There is still evidence of the old chalk quarry here too with the huge piles of chalk that sculpt the landscape and give the place so much character. Foundations of old railway buildings can also be found which shed more light on the history of the place. The most stunning thing about the reserve is how nature has taken over after all the quarrying that once took place here. During the Spring/Summer you will find plenty of wild flowers, grazing cattle and rare butterflies which are drawn to the chalk. On occasions birds of prey can be spotted soaring over the reserve too. This is not a place to miss if you're into walking, nature and history!
