Superb place to relax. Beautiful garden to sip wine of an evening. Comfortable front room. Excellent kitchen and not wanting or needing anything. Bedrooms cosy and comfortable. You won't need to wander or drive too far because there is so much to do on estate to keep you occupied. There are numerous walks, beautiful gardens, secret tunnels and a huge house to explore. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we look forward to going back.

It's a thoughtfully restored National Trust property - you can stay in a former gatehouse as a holiday cottage. It looks like a peaceful, relaxing location; but, alas, it's next to the entrance gate for Calke Abbey which the NT lock at night, so random motorists will come knock on your door (demanding to be let in or out) in the evening and the early morning. This spoils the seclusion. The interior is nice. Furnishings are high quality. Some steep and narrow steps are to be expected for an old building. The kitchen windows can't be opened, so if you're frying something smelly you'd better leave the front door open. It's a good location if you want to walk the grounds of Calke Abbey, or maybe birdwatching or cycling (pedestrian gates are still open at night)
